Photoemission Theory

چکیده

Photoemission spectroscopy has developed to one of the most powerful tools to study electronic and surface structures.1 This review article discusses basic features of photoemission theory based on many-body scattering theory. More sophisticated theory can be developed on the basis of nonequilibrium Green’s functions2–4 and quantum electrodynamics.5 These approaches are very powerful; however, they requires more theoretical background. Here, we rather extensively use the simple and direct method; the many-body scattering theory6–9 is still widely applicable as demonstrated below. Also, we restrict to nonrelativistic framework. Relativistic photoemission theory is found in other references.10,11

Gas-phase valence-electron photoemission spectroscopy using density functional theory.

We present a tutorial overview of the simulation of gas-phase valence-electron photoemission spectra using density functional theory (DFT), emphasizing both fundamental considerations and practical applications, and making appropriate links between the two. We explain how an elementary quantum mechanics view of photoemission couples naturally to a many-body perturbation theory view. We discuss ...

Measuring correlated electron dynamics with time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Time-resolved photoemission experiments can reveal fascinating quantum dynamics of correlated electrons. However, the thermalization of the electronic system is typically so fast that very short probe pulses are necessary to resolve the time evolution of the quantum state, and this leads to poor energy resolution due to the energy-time uncertainty relation. Although the photoemission intensity ...

Quantum-electrodynamic treatment of photoemission by a single-electron wave packet

A quantum-field-theory description of photoemission by a laser-driven single-electron wave packet is presented. We show that, when the incident light is represented with multimode coherent states then, to all orders of perturbation theory, the relative phases of the electron’s constituent momenta have no influence on the amount of scattered light. These results are extended using the Furry pict...

Photoemission measurements of Ultrathin SiO2 film at low take-off angles

The surface and interfacial analysis of silicon oxide film on silicon substrate is particularly crucial in the nano-electronic devices. For this purpose, series of experiments have been demonstrated to grow oxide film on Si (111) substrate. Then these films have been used to study the structure of the film by using X-ray photo emission spectroscopy (XPS) technique. The obtained results indicate...

Photoemission studies in MgB2

Photoemission spectroscopy measurements of MgB2 are reviewed. From angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, band dispersion is observed as is theoretically predicted, suggesting that the electronic structure of MgB2 is well described within band theory. From angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy, a clear peak ascribed to the superconducting coherent peak is observed. The shape of the sp...
